Description:

Myofunctional therapists play a fundamental role for patients in collaborative care with other

health care practitioners. Understanding the various types of appliances used in orthodontics,

orthotropic treatment, and sleep dentistry is key when communicating with patients as well as

providers.

In this presentation, we will explore the general concepts of orthodontic movement, the actions

of many types of expansion devices and mechanism of oral appliances used in sleep dentistry.

Outcomes:

1. Understand the general concepts of orthodontic expansion and tooth movement.

Description:

This presentation explores the critical relationship between oral structure and function, highlighting the synergistic role of myofunctional
therapy during palatal expansion. Without adequate space, patients may struggle to achieve proper tongue posture, oral rest position, and functional movement patterns. As orofacial myofunctional therapy continues to evolve alongside early orthodontic intervention, clinicians are increasingly encountering complex scenarios that require more adaptive strategies.

This advanced-level

lecture is designed for experienced myofunctional therapists seeking to deepen their clinical skills and broaden their problem-solving toolkit in cases involving palatal expanders. This session offers evidence-informed, clinically grounded myofunctional

tools and insights to confidently navigate the challenges presented by performing myofunctional therapy during orthodontic palatal
expansion treatment for best outcomes and long term success.

1. Explain the rationale for early referral for palatal expansion and the limitations of waiting until age seven or later.

This presentation explores the role of myofunctional therapy in enhancing outcomes of orthognathic surgery.

While surgical intervention addresses skeletal discrepancies, lasting

functional improvement requires neuromuscular adaptation. We’ll examine how integrating myofunctional therapy before and after surgery supports airway health, facial harmony, and long-term stability.

Outcomes:

1. Describe the anatomical and functional changes associated with orthognathic surgery that impact orofacial muscle patterns.

2. Identify the ideal timing and goals of myofunctional therapy intervention in

relation to orthognathic surgery (pre- and post-operative phases).

3. Develop and describe an evidence-informed myofunctional therapy protocol tailored for pre-

surgical preparation, including at least three specific exercises.

4. Design a post-surgical myofunctional therapy program to support healing,

functional restoration, and stability, including at least three specific exercises.

5. Assess a patient’s readiness for surgery and post-op recovery based on functional markers (e.g., oral rest posture, tongue tone, nasal breathing, basic swallow pattern) and collaborate effectively with surgical and orthodontic teams by communicating

relevant therapy goals and progress benchmarks.

Description:

This course is designed for healthcare providers who aim to develop a deeper, more integrative understanding of the breathing system as a functional and treatable domain. Relying on research in respiratory physiology, neuroscience, and integrative health, the course equips clinicians to systematically evaluate and address breathing dysfunctions as part of a comprehensive healthcare strategy. Participants will learn to assess the three pillars of breathing function—biomechanical, biochemical, and psychophysiological. The course introduces a structured, evidence-based clinical assessment process, including screening tools, observational strategies, and functional testing relevant across a wide range of conditions.

Participants will learn how to implement a variety of treatment techniques focusing on both restorative and regulatory strategies with their patients to improve breathing function. In addition, clinicians will learn how to identify when an interdisciplinary referral is warranted.

The exercises reviewed will be explored under the following domains:

No refunds. If participants are unable to attend in person, they will have the following options:
1. Watch the LIVE course on the day(s) of the Symposium.

2. Watch the on-demand (recorded) version of the Symposium, with access for TWO WEEKS.

Cancellation Policy

If Expressions Seminars (ASHA CEU Provider) or a Collaborative Partner (The MyoSphere) has to COMPLETELY cancel the Symposium due to public health crisis, inclement weather, illness, or family emergency, all participants will be notified via email used to register for the course and a future date will be selected. All attempts will be made to present a virtual Symposium.

Participants will have the option of attending in-person on the future date or viewing the Symposium virtually or through an on-demand recording after the Symposium.
